Cape jasmine, also known as gardenia jasminoides, has been used for dyeing textiles for centuries, particularly in China, where its fruit was traditionally utilized to produce a yellow dye. In the late 1980s, it was discovered that the fruit could also yield a blue dye, known as "Gardenia Blue," when reacted with certain amino acids, expanding its historical significance in textile dyeing.
